Dog Brushing

Brushing your dog can be a good way of interacting with the dog in a positive way that the dog will enjoy. It will go a long way to bonding with your dog as long as you make it enjoyable for the dog. Dog brushing has a number of benefits for both the owner and the dog.

The better the tools the easier the job, so I would recommend getting yourself the correct brush for your dogs coat type. It would be pointless trying to brush a long haired dog with a brush that is suitable for a short haired dog. And remember that the brushing should not be a chore for the dog to endure.

Reasons For Dog Brushing

Brushing can be positive interaction with your dog. As long as you are affectionate and reassuring your dog will enjoy being brushed. Brushing your dog helps to keep the coat clean and free of mats. Brushing will remove excess hair which can help to keep shedding down.

How To Brush Your Dog

Where you brush your dog will depend on how big the dog is. If they are a large breed then you will more than likely have to do this on the floor. If they are a smaller breed of dog then this can be done on the floor, a table or anywhere that is comfortable for both the dog and the owner. It is a good idea to get the dog to lie down during the brushing. Start brushing at the top of the dog at the head. The head of a dog is a very sensitive area so be gentle while you are brushing. Your brush strokes should be with the growth of the hair and not against it. After the head you should move on to the neck area and then to the front legs. From the front legs you should move onto the underbelly of the dog. Once you have brushed this then move onto the back and then the back legs and finish off with the tail.
